L’Occitane announces 29.3% net sales growth in the face of macroeconomic challenges
30 Nov 2022 --- Beauty and well-being player L’Occitane reveals the results of its interim fiscal year 2023 financial report for the six month period ending on 30 September 2022 (FY2023 H1). The report details a 0.5% gross profit margin growth over FY2022 H1, a 30.2% increase in gross sales compared to the previous year. Additionally, net sales increased 29.3%.
The company states that results are “broad-based” and reveal growth along all key brands, three geographic regions and three key channels including travel, brick-and-mortar establishments and online sales outlets. The acquisitions of Sol de Janeiro and Grown Alchemist further contributed to the company’s growth.
“Although current macroeconomic headwinds are likely to continue and lead to cost ramifications in all parts of our business, we are highly focused on executing a strong holiday season,” says André Hoffmann, vice-chairman and CEO at L’Occitane.
“In line with our corporate mission, we have a clear and collective focus on the triple bottom-line – our people, the planet and profitability – and remain committed to harnessing the inherent strengths of our brands to deliver sustainable growth and profitability.”
Against the grain
The company states that its core brands played a key role in its continued growth despite stalled momentum in China, a “relatively muted” growth across Asia and the divestments occurring in Russia. Total sales for FY2023 H1 reached €900.5 million (USD$934.7 million) compared to €696.4 million (USD$723.1 million) this time last year.
Additionally, operating profit increased by 10.3% though the operating profit margin dropped 1.6%. Management operating profit also increased by 36.4% with a 1.0% increase in the corresponding margin.
Overall gross profit for the period was €63.9 million (USD$66.3 million), €3.3 million (USD3.4 million) more than FY2022 H1, representing a 5.4% increase.
“Despite the challenging environment, the proven resilience of our business ensured that we continued to maintain strong growth momentum and achieve another record interim profit,” Hoffman underscores.
New year, new L’Occitane
The company also released its new mission statement.
Hoffman further explains: “The next phase of our ongoing transformation into a multi-brand and geographically-balanced organization was marked by the unveiling of our new corporate mission: With empowerment we positively impact people and regenerate nature.”
According to the company, the mission statement represents its three core principles.
